Young Life
Vida Joven (Young Life in Spanish) began in 1988 when Jim Hornsby walked onto the streets of Matagalpa, Nicaragua, with a baseball and a bat in his hand. Nicaraguan kids gathered around Jim, and in his broken Spanish he began to build relationships with these young people through the common language of sports. These kids were poor, really poor. And the barrios (small neighborhoods) where they grew up did not have access to social safety nets and education. So our work here was not only a spiritual work, but a work to help disadvantaged young people find ways to meet their total needs—spiritual, socio-economic, and physical.
When we sell a bag of coffee, we are making this Nicaraguan ministry to young people self-sustaining and self-supporting. That is why we say that 100% of what we do with our coffee is to benefit young Nicaraguans, to reach them with the message of the Christian gospel, and to help them navigate through the difficult waters of a poverty culture.
